Title

From Paul's second recorded letter to the church at Thessalonica

Background

The Thessalonian church is confused concerning the Second Coming of Christ. The church believes Christ's return is about to take place; therefore, many are neglecting their responsibilities and work. Instead, they are letting others take care of them while they do nothing more than wait for the Lord's return.

Content

In this letter to the Thessalonians, Paul stresses the importance of Christians using their time wisely. They are commended for their spiritual growth and promised judgment of those persecuting them. The conditions that will prevail at the time of Christ's return are outlined, including a great apostasy, which will take place. Paul exhorts the Thessalonian church to remain steadfast in their service, as the time of Jesus' return is not known. But the absolute surety of His coming is known and is the essence of these words from Paul.

Themes

  1. God's presence gives peace in every circumstance.

  2. The Lord is active, not idle.
  3. Condemnation awaits those who take pleasure in unrighteousness.
  4. Do not put off until tomorrow what you can do for God today.
  5. Christians should never grow tired of doing good works.

Key
Words

“Persecution”, “Work.” The “persecution” of these new Christians continues from legalistic Jews who will not submit to the Word of God. It is against this background that Paul implores the church not to be lazy, but to “work” with patience and diligence.
