The twelve books in this section of the Old Testament: Joshua,
Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings,
2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra,
Nehemiah, Esther are known as the historical books. They
cover about seven hundred years and were composed at many different times
and places but have been arranged in a sequence that tells the story of
God’s people from their entrance into the promised land (Canaan) through
the civil war and eventual fall of the both the northern and southern kingdoms,
and concluding with the return to and rebuilding of Jerusalem.
