Old Testament

Following are Bible Study notes and outlines of all books of the Old Testament. They're organized according to the order of books in the King James Version of the Bible. We plan to add new studies as they are finished.

The Books of Moses

The first five books of the Bible are called the “Pentateuch” which is a Greek term meaning "the five books." The Pentateuch includes the first five books of the Bible — Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books are often called “the Law,” but in addition to many of God's laws they include history, poems, songs, and narratives about God's dealings with His people from the Creation to the death of Moses. These books were written by Moses and thus are called the "books of Moses" by many.

Genesis

This Section contains an Overview, Historical Information, Audio, Outlines and Studies on the Book of Genesis

Overview

Author

Moses

Date
Written

Between 1450 and 1400 BC

Time Span

Chapters 1-11 record the first years of man's history from the
Creation to the Tower of Babel. Chapters 12-50 cover about 300 years,
centering around the lives of 4 men: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and
Joseph. Genesis spans more time than the other 65 books of the Bible combined

Title

The word “genesis” means “beginning” or
“origin.” Bereshith (Bereshith) the first word in the
Hebrew text, means “in the beginning.”

Background

Genesis is the first of the 5 books of Moses, called the Pentateuch.
Before the Genesis account, God was and always will be. Genesis deals
with the history of the human race dwelling in the lands from Eden to
Ur in the first 11 chapters, and from Canaan to Egypt in the
remaining 39 chapters. This first book forms the basis for all
further revelation about God and His plan for man.

Where
Written

The general belief is that Moses received this revelation while on
Mt. Sinai in the wilderness.

To Whom

Genesis is written for the benefit of the Israelites, but the
messages contained herein are timeless . . . as the promises God made
to the patriarchs are made known and the foundation is set for the
revelation of God's love and the redemption of mankind through Jesus Christ.

Content

God uses His Word to speak all of Creation into being. This Creation
is perfect until man sins by listening to Satan instead of trusting
God and obeying His plan. This sin of Adam and Eve results in
spiritual death and eventually leads to filling the world with hate,
violence, and disobedience. Finally, sin prevails until God uses a
flood to destroy mankind, except righteous Noah and his family. Even
after this, sin sweeps the land, and the people build the huge Tower
of Babel in defiance of God. God never stops loving man, however, and
the last 39 chapters of Genesis reveal how God through the family of
Abraham directs history to establish the early stages in His plan to
save the people and mend their fellowship with Him. The book closes
with His Chosen People in Egypt.

Themes

  1. God creates man in His own image for fellowship with Him.

  2. Man is created with a body, a soul, a spirit, and a free will to
make decisions for or against God.
  3. Though we sin, God will not give up on us or abandon us.
  4. In spite of our failures, God loves us
  5. God has the love and the power to protect and provide for us as
we place our faith in Him.

Key
Words

“Beginning”; “Man”; “Covenant.” Genesis
accounts for the “beginning” of the heavens and earth,
plant and animal life, “man” and woman, sin and
civilization, and God's work of redemption. God's eternal plan of
salvation for mankind is revealed through the “Covenant” He
establishes with Abraham.

Exodus

This Section contains an Overview, Historical Information, Audio, Outlines and Studies on the Book of Exodus

Overview

Author

Moses

Date
Written

Between 1450 and 1400 BC

Time Span

Approximately 431 years (the period of time from the arrival of Jacob
in Egypt to the construction of the Tabernacle in the wilderness).

Title

The word "exodus" means "exit" or
"departure." Named for the central event of Israel's Exodus
from Egyptian Bondage

Background

The second book of the Pentateuch, Exodus, is a continuation of the
story in the book of Genesis. Only 70 descendants of Joseph journeyed
to Egypt, but after increasing abundantly in number they became
oppressed as slaves to Egyptian leaders who did not remember Joseph.
During the preceding 4 centuries the people have grown to a nation of
some 3 million before their Exodus from Egypt begins.

Where
Written

The general belief is that Moses received this revelation while on
Mt. Sinai in the wilderness.

To Whom

Exodus was written for the Israelites, but the messages contained
herein are timeless . . . as God brings Israel from Egypt into the
land of promise we see a beautiful picture of God's care for His people.

Content

Exodus begins with the descendants of Jacob living in slavery to the
Egyptians. Moses is called and directed by God to lead the Israelites
out of this bondage. Israel is finally permitted to leave Egypt after
God directs Moses to pronounce a series of plagues upon Egypt and the
Pharaoh. The Passover is instituted, emphasizing that blood
redemption is always necessary, and the resulting Covenant between
God and the Israelites identifies them as God's Chosen People. God
then delivers Israel miraculously through the Red Sea. At Mt. Sinai
God gives the Ten Commandments, but later has to judge the people for
their apostasy and worship of the golden calf. A few months after
this, the Tabernacle is constructed.

Themes

  1. God's protection and provision are available to His children in times
    of need.

  2. Obedience to the Word of God brings prosperity and blessings . .
. disobedience brings failure and punishment.
  3. God's promises can be depended upon totally and uncompromisingly.

Key
Words

"Deliverance"; "Redemption";
"Commandments." The "deliverance" of the nation
of Israel from their oppression as slaves is just one of the many
miraculous acts performed by God for the complete
"redemption" of His Chosen People. The Ten
"Commandments" and other laws give the people the
instruction needed to live as God desires.

The Books of Wisdom

The books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon are written in poetic style. The Hebrew word for wisdom is often translated "skill for living" stressing the practical nature of Jewish life, thus these writings are grouped together as the “wisdom”books. Wisdom literature gives counsel on the living of life and attempts to make sense of the problems people face. Job addresses the problem of suffering, Proverbs promotes decent and righteous living, Ecclesiastes puts all the "good things" in life into perspective, and the Song of Solomon celebrates true love. The book of Psalms is a collection of 150 songs and poems most written by King David, which were used in Israel’s worship.

Proverbs Lesson Plan

Proverbs Series Plan

Preface To These Notes:

Incompleteness Of This Work

First, it needs to be said that this topical treatment of Proverbs is incomplete at best.  The further we went on this project the more obvious it became to us that the final product would not be exhaustive.  However, we believe the topics and topic families tie together adequately and as such fairly represent the general content of Proverbs

The Lesson Breakdown

The lesson breakdown here is certainly not the only way these topics could be grouped and divided.  We tried to follow a sensible order and group enough material for one average length sermon.  Where there was an abundance of material, we suggested a part 1 and part 2.  You may doubtless be able to contrive a series plan that suits your purposes better.  If so, feel free to rearrange in a way that seems best.

Repetitive References

The referencing system for these topics is repetitive by design.  For example, “tongue” will list every subtopic in that family such as “tongue-traps” or “tongue-lying”.  Therefore the Proverbs passages will be listed more than once within a family of topics.  And because many verses discuss more than one topic or subtopic, a passage will often be listed even more times within a family of topics.

Using The References

Please understand that the references outside of Proverbs and the biblical examples supplied are intended to be a starting place for your study.  If you are building a sermon on a particular topic don’t feel obligated to use all the references or examples.  You may want to at least mention most of the Proverbs references if your sermon is part of a series on Proverbs.  But if it’s strictly a topical study, think of this lesson guide as nothing more than a research tool.

We have double checked every reference here.  Some we’ve checked much more than twice.  It may be that you will not follow our line of reasoning in why a Proverbs reference is categorized under its topics, or why another reference is listed under a topic or an example given.  We hope most of the referencing will be self-evident.  But if it’s not, please know we double checked and, though a mistake could have escaped our attention, we likely had a reason for listing passages where we did.

See Related Topics

Because of the way we cross referenced many topics, there is a certain amount of redundancy built into our system.  This means there are several topics and subtopics that would use virtually the same references and examples.  Many times where this is the case, rather than repeatedly placing the same references in, we simply put “See Related Topics”.  This refers to the way the material is cross referenced on the web page.  Each topic and subtopic has topics to which they are related.  By following the link to related topics you will find relevant references and Bible examples.

Use Proverbs Study Interface On The Internet

We highly recommend you use the Proverbs Study Interface on the Internet as a companion to this guide.  Without it, you will not be able to know with certainty which related topics have references that might help with a given topic.  It also has the text of Proverbs for quick reference and a topic tree to help give an overview of how these topics represent the content of Proverbs.  You can find Proverbs Study Interface at cofcnet.com or go directly to this link .

Lesson 1 and 2:  Introduction To Proverbs Part 1 and 2

I.    Sections Of Proverbs And Their Authors:  (The book of Proverbs is easily divided into five sections.  These are discussed here.  These five sections seem to have been compiled over time.  Some suggest the compilation was complete three centuries after Solomon.)

      1.    Chapters 1-9:  (This is the first section of the book of Proverbs.  This is part that is most certainly done by Solomon, as stated in Prov 1:1.  Note I Kings 4:32 attributes 3,000 proverbs to Solomon.  Thus it seems that fairly early there was a collection of Solomon’s proverbs, of which portions of this book must have been a part.)

            A.    Evil Woman:  (Within these nine chapters, there is the Evil Woman [2:16, 5:3, 5:20, 6:24, 7:5, and 9:13-18].  He also refers to the evil woman in another one of his works, Eccl. 7:26.)

            B.    Wisdom Woman:  (Something else that is unique to this particular section is wisdom personified as a woman [3:13-18, 4:5-14, 8:1-36, 9:1-12].  These two topics do not occur after chapter 9.)

      2.    Chapters 10-24:  (This is the second section of Proverbs and according to some ancient MSS of the Vulgate, it is “Proverbiorum liber secundus or the second book of the Proverbs. [See Clarke’s Commentary, Job-Malachi, Page 729].  This is written by Solomon (10:1) possibly at a different time or added to the compilation of earlier proverbs at a different time.)

      3.    Chapters 25-29:  (This section contains proverbs of Solomon, but they were copied down by the men of King Hezekiah, the son of Ahaz [Prov. 25:1, Matt 1:10].  This was possibly added as a supplement to the previous two sections, these chapters being additional sayings of Solomon. [See Clarke’s Commentary, Job-Malachi, Page 773].  Some sayings and verses contained in this section are exact replicas of other verses contained throughout Solomon’s writings.  For example, Prov. 20:16 has the same content as Prov. 27:13.  Like the greater part of Proverbs, this section is verse-by-verse wisdom from the great King Solomon.)

      4.    Chapter 30:  (This section is the first about which there is debate regarding the author.  Prov. 30:1 says that Agur the son of Jakeh wrote this portion of Proverbs.  Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance says Agur [#94] and Jakeh [#3348] are fanciful names for Solomon.  Some believe that Jakeh is another name for David who is the father of Solomon.  If this be the case then Solomon wrote this section of the book as well.  However, some believe these are names of now unknown Arabian nobles or wise men.  Interestingly enough, the Vulgate translates Prov. 30:1, ”The words of the collector, the son of the vomiter: the vision of the man who has God with him, and who is fortified by God dwelling with him…”  [See Clarke’s Commentary, Job-Malachi, Page 785].)

      5.    Chapter 31:  (Most Jewish and many other commentators conjecture that Leumuel is a name for Solomon and that these words were spoken by his mother when his reign was slipping into sensuality and excess described in I Kings 11:1-4.  Others suggest Lemuel, meaning “for God” is an ideal name intended to suggest the ideal king who’s fully devoted to God in life and service.  Within this chapter we read of the virtuous woman and various qualities a woman and wife should have.)

II.   The Literary Style Of Proverbs:  (Proverbs is Hebrew poetry.  As such it employs sundry literary styles and devices.  These add to its beauty and character.  Consider these examples of poetic style.

      1.    Parallelism:  (The Hebrew word for proverb has a root meaning that means comparison, the putting of this idea and that together.  Thus much of it is structured in parallelism.  This usually consists of two successive phrases with a relationship with each other.  Note these different styles of parallelism.)

            A.    Antithetic Parallelism:  (Let us now observe the structure of Antithetic Parallelism.  Antithetic Parallelism is where the second phrase of the proverb is a direct contrast of the first phrase.  This is clearly illustrated in Prov. 10:27.

The fear of the LORD prolongs days

but the years of the wicked will be shortened.

In this passage we learn that if the fear of the Lord will prolong our days, but the wicked will have their days shortened.  There is a direct contrast in the two phrases.  This verse shows Antithetic Parallelism.)

            B.    Synonymous Parallelism:  (Also called Synaptic Parallelism, this style of parallelism has a second phrase that will say essentially the same thing as the first, but in a more creative way.  For example, consider Prov. 1:26.

                  I also will laugh at your calamity;

I will mock when your terror comes,

This says that I will laugh at your calamity, and I will mock [laugh, or make fun of] when your terror comes [or calamity comes].  Thus we see each phrase essentially has the same message, the second being expanded in wording.)

            C.    Emblematic Parallelism:  (In this style of parallelism, one line illuminates the other by a simile or metaphor.  Prov. 25:12 supplies a perfect example of this.

                  Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold;

is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear.

This compares an earring of gold and an ornament of gold to a rebuke given to an obedient ear.  It uses the metaphor to explain the point of the proverb.)

      2.    Number Climax:  (Note Prov. 6:16-19.  Here we find six things God hates, yea seven.  This numerical pattern of “x” yea “x+1” is also used in Prov. 30:15-16, 18-19, 21-31.  Also note Job 5:19.  The purpose of this kind of numerical pattern is not to give a complete or exhaustive list. Instead it is to stress the final item as sometimes the culmination or product of its preceding items.  It is a numerical climax in order to stress all items, but especially the last.)

      3.    Acrostic:  (The description of the virtuous wife in Prov. 31:10-31 is an acrostic.  This is where sections begin with succeeding letters of the 22 Hebrew alphabetical characters in order.  This device is used in Ps. 119 and places in the prophets as well.  Reasons or significance of the acrostic may vary with the different places it is used.  Some conjecture it might be to help provide structure or might have been a memory aid.)

III.  The Nature of Proverbs:  (We need to understand that proverbs are not always intended to be absolutes.  They should often be taken as general truths.  This fact in no way lessens the force of the proverb, but instead keeps it in its intended perspective.  Note these examples.)

      1.    Prov. 18:22:  He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the Lord.”  (This passage tells that if a man finds wife, it is good and it obtains favor from the Lord.  Obviously there are instances wherein a man finds a wife but not a good thing and not favor from the Lord.  This passage is not an always absolute, but is generally absolute.  For example, when King Ahab married Jezebel [I Kings 21:31] was God happy?  Note her ungodliness in passages like I Kings 18:4.   She persecuted the prophets of the Lord, so was it good for King Ahab that she married him?  We see here, that Prov. 18:22 is general in its character.  Generally, a man who finds a wife is blessed, but there are some exceptions to the rule.)

      2.    Prov. 10:6:  “Blessings are on the head of the righteous, But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.”  (This verse says that the righteous will receive blessings and violence covers the mouth of the wicked.  However, we know that sometimes events happen in life different from this tendency.  The Bible teaches us that the sun will shine on the good and the evil [Matt 5:45], and that time and chance happens to us all [Eccl 9:11].  Thus the proverb frames a general truth about the way things in life tend to go.  Known exceptions to this propensity do not diminish the truth and value of the proverb since it is not intended to be understood as an absolute.)

      3.    Prov. 11:16:  “A gracious woman retains honor, But ruthless men retain riches.”  (We all likely know some ruthless, strong man who does not retain wealth.  Again, the proverb is not intended to be an iron-clad never-changing rule of life.)

      4.    Others:  (There are other examples we will not tediously dissect.  Consider Prov. 22:11 and Prov. 14:35.  From these and many other instances you can see the non-absolute nature of a proverb clearly illustrated.)

IV.   Not Moses’ Law:  (It is worth mentioning that Proverbs contains no references to Sabbath law, Hebrew holidays, Mosaic sacrifice rituals or other things exclusive to Moses’ law.  The book is not a part of Moses’ law per se, though it was written during that time.  The fact the book mentions no a whisper of these Mosaic rituals suggests it is not about Moses’ law but about timeless moral principles.)

V     Proverbs Tree:  (Because Proverbs was compiled over time it does not contain large sections following a specific theme.  Places like Prov. 7 and Prov. 31 where nearly an entire chapter follows the same line of thought are the exception and not the rule.  Much of Proverbs is a somewhat random arrangement of moral principles.  However, the book retains a theme in that all virtues and vices stem from wisdom or a lack thereof.  Thus we can think of the various subjects in Proverbs as fitting on a tree, where God emanates wisdom from which branch out all other subjects.  See chart on Proverbs subject tree.)

Conclusion:  (In this introduction we have went into the sections and their authors, the different styles of parallelism, and non-absolute proverbs.  I have tried to mark   all of the references.)

Incompleteness Of This Work

First, it needs to be said that this topical treatment of Proverbs is incomplete at best. The further we went on this project the more obvious it became to us that the final product would not be exhaustive. However, we believe the topics and topic families tie together adequately and as such fairly represent the general content of Proverbs.

Loading Time

Please be patient as the page takes a while to load. Due to the way our software converted the Proverbs Tree into a web page, there are scores of spacer graphics that must be loaded. When you first go to the Proverbs page the tree will look incomplete. In time, usually within two minutes, depending on your connection speed, the remaining components will load and the tree will be complete.

The Layout

The larger section in the upper left is our Proverbs Tree. It lists all the topics we have in our subject breakdown of Proverbs. Find more information about the tree below. The section to the far right is an alphabetical listing of all our topics. Click on any topic here or on the tree to bring up information in the lower middle section. That section will show our logo when you first load the page. After clicking a topic the lower middle section will show information about that topic. In there you will find Proverbs references on that topic. You can click any of those references and it will bring the Proverbs text in the lower left to that portion of the book. Also, in the lower middle section you will see other Bible references, Bible examples and related topics. Unlike the Proverbs references, the other Bible references are not clickable. The related topics are clickable. Clicking on of them will change bring up in that section whatever topic you selected.

The Tree

The Proverbs Tree is intended to represent every topic we have in our Proverbs Breakdown. These are arranged in a way that shows a line of thought. The root topic being God, all other topics branch out from there. Wisdom and knowledge emanate from God. Everything else is a product of wisdom and knowledge or show a lack thereof. Most topics could be placed in several places on the tree. We make no claim that the way we have them arranged is the only way possible. We sought to represent the topical content of Proverbs as we have it broken down. If you can't find a desired topic on the tree, look for it on the alphebetical list on the right.

Repetitive References

The referencing system for these topics is repetitive by design. For example, “tongue” will list every subtopic in that family such as “tongue-traps” or “tongue-lying”. Therefore the Proverbs passages will be listed more than once within a family of topics. And because many verses discuss more than one topic or subtopic, a passage will often be listed even more times within a family of topics or related topics.

Using The References

Please understand that the references outside of Proverbs and the biblical examples supplied are intended to be a starting place for your study. If you are building a sermon or study on a particular topic don’t feel obligated to use all the references or examples. You may want to at least mention most of the Proverbs references if your sermon is part of a series on Proverbs. But if it’s strictly a topical study, think of these references as nothing more than a place to start in your research.

The Books of the Prophets

The books in this section deal with the lives and messages of prophets who lived at different times in Israel’s history. The books are not arranged in chronological order. First are four major prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel. After the four major prophets are the twelve minor prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. (Major & minor referring to the length of the books, not their quality or importance.) Prophets were those who served as God's messenger's to His people, beginning primarily with Moses (Ex.3:1-4:17). There were many prophets who did not write down their messages. A common formula found in the prophetical books includes 1) an introduction that the message is from God; 2) An accusation or condemnation of the people for some particular wickedness; 3) pronouncement of the judicial sentence from God; 4) description of the forthcoming punishment; and 5) a promise of redemption.
